Aviation Medicals in the UK: Do You Need a Class 1 or Class 2 to Start Flight Training?

Obtaining the correct medical certificate is an essential first step before you can begin flight training

What Is an Aviation Medical Certificate?

An aviation medical certificate is proof that you meet the physical and mental health standards required to fly an aircraft safely. The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) issues two main types of medical certificates: Class 1 and Class 2. These certificates are designed to assess different levels of fitness depending on the kind of flying you intend to do.

Class 1 vs. Class 2 Medicals: What's the Difference?

  • Class 1 Medical: This is the highest level of medical certification and is required if you want to train as a commercial pilot. It involves a thorough examination, which includes tests for vision, hearing, cardiovascular health, and general physical and mental fitness. Class 1 medicals must be renewed regularly, with frequency depending on your age.
  • Class 2 Medical: This is required for private pilots, such as those training for a Private Pilot Licence (PPL). A Class 2 medical is less intensive than a Class 1 and covers basic health requirements, including vision and hearing tests, as well as general physical examinations. Class 2 medicals also need to be renewed periodically, with renewal periods based on age and other health factors.

Do You Need a Medical to Start Flight Training?

The short answer is: it depends on what kind of training you’re planning to start.

  • For Recreational Flying (PPL Training): If you're starting out with the intention of getting a PPL, you will need a Class 2 medical before you can fly solo. However, you can begin your flight training and take lessons with an instructor before you obtain your medical certificate. This means you can get a feel for flying without the pressure of medical clearance initially.
  • For Commercial Training (CPL/ATPL Training): If you are aiming for a commercial pilot career, you will need a Class 1 medical before you start any training that will count towards your Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). It is recommended to get a Class 1 medical early on, ideally before investing significant time and money into your training, to ensure you meet the health requirements for a career in aviation.

How to Get an Aviation Medical Certificate in the UK

To obtain a Class 1 or Class 2 medical, you will need to book an appointment with an Aeromedical Examiner (AME) approved by the UK CAA. For a Class 1 medical, the examination must be done at one of the CAA-approved Aeromedical Centres (AeMC), whereas a Class 2 medical can be conducted by any certified AME across the UK. The process includes a series of tests to check your overall health and ensure you meet the required safety standards for flying.

Why Should You Get Your Medical Early?

Obtaining your medical certificate early in your training journey is crucial for a few reasons. It gives you the confidence that you meet the physical requirements, helps you avoid unnecessary costs if there are any underlying issues, and ensures there are no delays once you’re ready to progress to solo flying or commercial training. Many aspiring pilots find it motivating to know that they have met this important requirement, and it allows them to focus on learning to fly.

Aviation Academy (Scotland) Medical Requirements

At Aviation Academy (Scotland), we recommend that all students pursuing a career in aviation obtain their Class 1 medical as early as possible. For those starting with a PPL, a Class 2 medical is required before solo flights, but we allow students to start their training without a medical initially. For your convenience, we can arrange for a UK CAA Class 2 medical examination within the first few weeks of training at our academy.
